What is a student request?

Students can request to speak to an adult directly through Kelvin. In today's digital world, students often find it easier to reach out confidentially--without the fear of embarrassment or ridicule from their peers. Today's students are accustomed to sharing their thoughts, feelings, and experiences in the digital world (for better or worse). This is an optional feature and is by no means required; however, it has led to a number of students getting the help they might have otherwise not received.

At the conclusion of each Pulse, Kelvin can prompt students to request assistance from an adult. This is often a school counselor, licensed social worker, or other school personnel prepared to respond quickly and thoughtfully to requests. You can configure who sees and responds to requests.

PLEASE NOTE: It is critically important that you have a protocol in place before turning on this feature. You'll want to be sure you have a process in place where trained staff are able to respond quickly to the requests.

How do you turn this on/off?

Each Pulse can be configured to have this feature turned on or off. You can change this by:

  1. Logging into Kelvin
  2. Navigating to the "Pulses" page from the top navigation menu
  3. Click the "..." for the appropriate Pulse, and select "Edit Settings"
  4. Scroll down and check (or uncheck) the box for "Allow students to request to speak to a counselor"

Which students are able to request to speak to someone?

Students who answer at least half of the Pulse's questions unfavorably. For example, if there are 8 questions and a student responds to 4 of the 8 unfavorably, then they will see the prompt below.

Where can I see the requests?

We email you a count of the requests in our email (the first screenshot below), and the requests are available directly from our Launchpad (2nd screenshot). Keep in mind, the requests you see are based on two things: 1) your visibility (for FERPA compliance), i.e. you only see students who are rostered to you or you have an educational purpose of viewing and 2) the settings made by your system admin (some admins elect to only allow some personnel to see and respond to requests).

How do I view and respond to the students' requests?

There are two ways:

  1. Click the link directly from your email summary
  2. Click on the "Requests" tile from the Launchpad (shown above)

This will bring up a list of students. By clicking on the student's name who has requested help, you'll be brought to their Timeline where you can see the narrative of a student's experience and interactions with Kelvin, and leave comments for your colleagues to see. This is also where you can resolve the request (after it's been responded to), and collaborate with others to ensure students' needs are met. You can choose to leave a private comment (visible only by you) as a reminder to yourself. Example below.
